Electromagnetic Relays

Electromagnetic relays consist of an electromagnet which is mechanically connected to electrical contacts with the use of an armature. Thanks to this fact it is possible to connect high power executive circuits with the use of relatively weak signals required to power control coil. Relays provide galvanic separation of control signal from execution circuits, they can switch between several output circuits, and they are available in a number of versions that differ in terms of their intended use, load capacity, coil parameters, number of electrical contacts, enclosure construction, connectors, and resistance to environmental factors.

Reed electromagnetic relays are equipped with a switching element called reed which consists of tight glass enclosure with contacts made of ferromagnetic metal. A tube is filled with inert gas and contacts are covered with protective coating what makes them durable and resistant to environmental factors. Reed is very sensitive to magnetic field; after placing it inside an electromagnet coil, a relay is formed. Reed electromagnetic relays are fast and are characterised by low power consumption. They can be used to switch low currents; versions with mercury are used to switch high voltages. They are commonly used in measuring equipment, automation, and telecommunications.

Reed electromagnetic relays are suitable for universal applications. They are characterised by their small dimensions, thanks to which relays can be mounted on PCBs, as well as by low or at most medium load capacity. These elements are put in tight cuboidal enclosures mounted in sockets or on PCBs, and they are available in various configurations in terms of coils and contacts.

Industrial electromagnetic relays are durable and they are resistant to temperature and environmental factors. They are designed to be used with medium range power, and they are perfect for industrial installations. They are available in versions that can be mounted in sockets, on a DIN rail, and on PCBs, as well as in versions that can be attached to enclosures. Industrial relays usually have transparent enclosures (it allows for monitoring the wear of contacts) and additional functionalities, such as operation indicators and a test button.

Power electromagnetic relays are designed to switch high powers for DC and AC voltage. Versions designed to be used with high current are equipped with screw terminals or connector inlets and enclosures tightened with screws (power electromagnetic relays for lower loads are also available in versions that can be mounted on PCBs).

Automotive electromagnetic relays are designed to switch current of value of several dozen of amperes, at the constant voltage of up to 30V. They are equipped with endings suitable to connect cables ended with terminals and with endings allowing for mounting the relay in a socket. These relays are resistant to overloads, inrush current of substantial value and they operate in wide temperature range.
