Arduino is both a manufacturer of devices of type (single-board computers), and a community.
The history of Arduino began in 2005 when a group of lecturers and students at the University of Ivrea (Italy) decided to develop and build simple and inexpensive development kit for educational purposes, built on the popular 8-bit ATMEL AVR Micro-controller. Both the hardware and development platform was supposed to be (and is) completely open-source, which was a determining factor for its huge popularity and user community.
Currently, Arduino as a manufacturer offers several development kits using ATMEL AVR and ARM micro-controllers, and a large number of boards to extend (the so-called shields).
