What should be considered when choosing cable ties?

Tie wraps are also called cable ties (or colloquially zip ties). The two first names indicate the main application and the mode of action which should be considered while choosing the components. A proper choice guarantees that the ties will meet the expectations and prevent the user from any unwanted incidents that could occur during or after the assembly.

The first step in the selection of an appropriate tie wrap should be to determine its intended application. This will allow you to select the key properties best tailored to your needs. Zip ties that are intended for outdoor use should be characterized by resistance to sunlight and the operating temperature range corresponding to the conditions of their working environment. Temperature range and flammability rating of tie wraps.

The temperature range is related to the durability of the cable tie material. Most often, they are made of polyamide which maintains its properties in temperatures ranging from -45°C to 85°C, which is sufficient for basic workshop applications - the main intended purpose of these products.If properly strapped, tie wraps hold a bundle of cables and fasten them together to keep them in order and facilitate wire grouping and classification. Zip ties are used in places, where cables are placed densely or where they should not be stored separately. It is worth mentioning that some cable ties have an additional surface for notes, on which the user may indicate their specific marking or describe the elements which they keep together. Another parameter that can be taken into account, apart from the temperature range, is the flammability rating, which indicates the flammability properties and fire safety of the used element. Cable ties are tested by way of a vertical flammability test.

Industries often impose additional requirements that must be met for the safe installation of zip ties. These can include such properties as e.g. possibility of unzipping the tie after installation or the opposite, i.e. permanent fixing, which can be undone only by damaging the tie. When focusing on the above mentioned aspects, we shouldn’t forget about the functionality and much simpler properties that can also affect the proper use of these elements. The length and width of the zip tie has to be selected based on the diameter and number of cables in the bundle in order to prevent spontaneous unzipping or breakage.
