Photon - definition
Photon is an elementary physical particle that acts as the quantum carrier of electromagnetic interactions and transports a discrete amount of light energy. In quantum mechanics, a photon is described as a massless boson with spin 1, propagating at the speed of light in a vacuum. Its energy is directly proportional to the frequency of the associated electromagnetic wave.
In the wave-particle duality model, the photon exhibits both particle-like and wave-like properties, meaning it can be described as both a quantized packet of energy and a wave propagating through space. This dual nature explains phenomena such as interference, diffraction, photoemission, and Compton scattering. A photon carries no electric charge or magnetic moment, and thus does not interact directly with electric or magnetic fields, but it can interact with charged particles, excite atoms, or trigger photoelectric effects.
In physics and engineering, the photon plays a fundamental role in the description and application of light and other forms of electromagnetic radiation. It is the primary agent in the emission and absorption of radiation in atomic and molecular systems, as well as a carrier of information in optoelectronic, telecommunication, and quantum technologies. In astrophysics, photons enable the observation of cosmic phenomena across different spectral ranges, while in biology and medicine they are used in diagnostics and light-based therapies. The properties of photons are also harnessed in advanced laser systems, photosensitive sensors, and quantum cryptography.
