AUX (eng. Auxiliary) is a term used in consumer electronics and audio systems as an abbreviation for the word auxiliary, meaning a supplementary or additional function. It most commonly refers to an audio input or output that allows an external sound source to be connected to an amplifier, speaker set, car radio, or other sound playback device.
The AUX input is typically implemented in the form of a 3.5 mm jack or RCA socket, and its primary feature is the analog nature of signal transmission. It allows for the transmission of uncompressed audio signals directly from the headphone output of a phone, MP3 player, computer, or other source, without the need for digital processing. In practice, this means ease of use and wide compatibility with many devices.
Due to the unspecified input signal voltage level, the sound quality in an AUX connection may depend on the impedance characteristics of the source and receiver, as well as the quality of the cable used. The lack of standardization of signal parameters makes AUX a universal solution, but with limited resistance to interference and signal loss over long cables.
In modern electronic systems, the AUX function is sometimes replaced by digital interfaces, such as Bluetooth or USB, but it still remains a commonly used and simple way to connect audio devices in consumer and industrial applications.
