Toroidal transformers are different from traditional transformers due to their specific structure. The core is in the shape of a ring with winding on it. Toroidal transformers are eagerly applied e.g. in audio devices and lighting systems. They differ mainly in terms of sizes and power, as well as permitted maximum voltage and current.
TME’s offer includes a wide selection of toroidal transformers. The smallest toroidal transformers have rated power of 10VA, but you can also find models that offer power up to several thousand times higher. When choosing a toroidal transformer, its primary voltage is of major importance. That’s why we encourage you to use the search engine or filters on our website during your search for an optimal transformer.
These components are often used in input stages of mains power supplies, and thus models adjusted to mains voltage (i.e. 230VAC) are the most common. There are also 3-phase toroidal transformers available – with primary voltage of 3x 400VAC. The secondary voltage range is a lot wider, and it can be selected for a particular device. The most popular are toroidal transformers with secondary voltage of 12V, 24V, or 14V. You should also pay attention to appropriate secondary winding current, as it’s a very important parameter.
Toroidal transformers weigh from 200g upwards. Weight is important, as they are relatively heavy, which means that pressure exerted on a PCB board can be a factor to consider when designing a solution. Large toroidal transformers can weigh up to several hundred kilos, which is why only some of them have pins for PCB boards.
The majority features wires that can be connected in any selected way. To make things easier, some models feature dedicated terminal blocks to connect wires from the outside. This solution is often used in models with high IP protection class, resistant to harsh environmental conditions.
