Modem (Modulator-Demodulator) is a device for converting digital signals generated by computers or other digital devices into analogue signals suitable for transmission over a communication medium such as telephone lines, radio waves or optical fibres, and for reverse conversion - from an analogue signal to a digital signal. This process involves modulation, i.e. the superimposition of digital information on a carrier wave, and demodulation, i.e. the recovery of information from this wave at the end of the transmission path.
Modems play an important role in telecommunications and data transmission systems, enabling long-distance communication over analogue channels. They were particularly popular in consumer applications during the development of Internet access over telephone networks, and their operation was based on the use of classical modulation techniques such as amplitude modulation (AM), frequency (FM) or phase (PM). Modern modems use complex modulation and coding schemes, providing higher throughput, noise immunity and transmission efficiency.
Depending on the transmission environment and communication standard, the modem can be integrated with other network functions, such as a router, access point Wi-Fi or a fibre interface. In mobile and broadband technologies, modems support different transmission protocols, including DSL, LTE, 5G or DOCSIS, adapting the digital signal to the physical characteristics of the medium.
The modem's design includes components responsible for signal conversion, synchronisation, filtering, error correction and data flow management. These functions enable reliable and efficient transmission of information between remote digital systems, regardless of the type of transmission medium used.
