RTU (Remote Terminal Units) - definition

RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) is an industrial microprocessor-based device used for remote monitoring, data acquisition and control in Automation systems, most commonly in distributed SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) networks. The RTU provides an interface between the physical measurement and execution devices and the superordinate management systems, enabling the transmission of real-time information and the execution of control commands received from the control centre.

Devices of this type integrate digital and analogue input/output modules, signal transducers, communication interfaces (e.g. RS-485, Ethernet, GSM, radio), as well as embedded software responsible for local data processing, event logging and support for communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, IEC 60870-5 or OPC. The RTU can operate independently, performing automatic tasks based on the built-in logic, or in cooperative mode with other devices and superordinate systems.

In practical applications, RTUs are deployed in power stations, water supply systems, gas plants, sewage systems, transport infrastructure and process industries. Thanks to their resistance to environmental conditions, their ability to operate over a wide temperature range and their backup power supply, they are suitable for operation in harsh field conditions. The data buffering function allows information to be retained even when communication with the central system is temporarily lost.

The RTU architecture supports the decentralisation of Automation systems, increasing their flexibility, reliability and real-time capability. Advanced models are also equipped with cyber security, redundancy and data analysis local functions, enabling the implementation of Industry 4.0 concepts and the development of smart infrastructure networks.
