It is used in the vast majority of devices and machines, and its operation relies on the friction of the working surface of a thread. It is classified as a direct, separable connection, which makes it a universal solution in design. The basic criterion for selection is thread diameter – the external thread of a bolt should match the internal thread of the hole. While the most common threads in Poland are metric threads (M), some of the connections use the imperial units – inches. Another key feature is the head and its cutting. There are cheese, hexagonal, cone, or spherical heads with imbus, square, Philips, Pozidriv, or Torx cuttings. Each of them has different mechanical parameters. To fasten a given type, you need to use a dedicated bit. You should also consider the strength class. It usually comprises two numbers. The former references the minimum tensile strength (divided by 100), and the latter denotes the ratio of the yield strength to tensile strength (multiplied by 10).
