(33)Heat shrink tubes are used for insulating electrical connections, protecting cables and cable harnesses from wear and environmental factors. They are used to repair cable connections, insulate connections of wires of different diameters, and seal places where connectors are mounted. They are available in the form of tubes made of plastic polyolefin or cross-linked polyolefin (POX), their diameter varies from 1 to 120mm (before shrinking), they are available in several different colours as well as in a transparent version. There are also versions containing special glue inside, which, during the shrinking process, secures the tube on a cable, fills spaces and ensures tight connection. Shrinkage coefficient of tube differs depending on tube type (from 2:1 to 6:1); it determines how much initial material diameter shrinks during the application. Tubes with high shrinkage coefficient allow for shielding fine wires together with a big connector tightly, leading out a fine wire from thick cable harness without additional intermediary elements, or protecting connection of cables of different diameters.
Heat shrink tubes can be used in wide temperature range, even from -55°C up to +125°C, what makes it possible to use them in automotive sector and industrial applications. They are flame retardant and elastic, and they do not contain halogens. Shrinking process of the material requires the tube to be heated with the use of stream of hot air, which temperature exceeds 110-125°C.
Their advantages include high quality moisture sealing, protection against mechanical factors, and good electrical insulation. Breakdown voltage can reach up to 25kV/mm (depending on version); thanks to this fact heat shrink tubes can also be used in energy installations.
