Relay - definition

Relay is an electromagnetic or electronic actuating component that enables control of an electrical circuit using a low-power signal, often originating from a control or logic system. Its primary function is to provide galvanic isolation between the control circuit and the load, and to perform switching operations in response to a defined signal impulse. Relays are widely used for switching currents in power circuits, industrial automation, safety systems, and consumer electronics.

A traditional electromagnetic relay consists of a coil, magnetic core, armature, and a set of contacts. When voltage is applied to the coil, a magnetic field is generated, attracting the movable mechanical element and changing the position of the contacts—resulting in the opening or closing of an electrical connection. Once the voltage is removed, a spring or gravity returns the system to its default resting position. Thanks to this mechanical construction, relays can switch circuits with varying voltage and current parameters, both AC and DC.

To meet demands for faster, quieter operation and greater durability, solid-state relays (SSR) have been developed. These devices utilize the switching properties of semiconductors such as transistors, thyristors, or triacs instead of moving parts. As a result, they eliminate mechanical wear, though they may require additional cooling and noise filtering.

Depending on their intended application, relays may include features such as time delays, analog signal switching, threshold monitoring, or activation under specific logical conditions. They are used in both simple automation circuits and advanced process control systems, where reliable switching is critical to operational safety and continuity. When designing systems with relays, electrical contact parameters, service life, switching time, and environmental requirements must all be considered.
