Laboratory power supply units can be divided into two categories: traditional and programmable.
Traditional power supply units enable:
Programmable power supply units enable automatic control with the use of external digital interfaces, like Ethernet, GPIB, RS232 or RS485, or USB, as well as applying settings entered from a keypad on the front side of the power supply unit.
Power supply units can also be divided in terms of the number of channels supported. The most popular models support 1 or 2 channels, but there are also 3- or 4-channel models available on the market.
The basic parameters of laboratory power supply units are: max. current and output voltage. The smallest laboratory power supply units have output current limited to several hundreds of milliamps, but the largest models can deliver even several hundreds of amps. For service and laboratory works, PSUs with adjustable voltage of up to a few dozen volts are sufficient, but you can also find models offering up to ca. 600V on the market.
Numerous applications require precise adjustment and high stability of current supplied. This can be found in datasheets of particular models. Built-in safeguards are also very important. A good power supply unit should feature both overvoltage and overload protection. Numerous models also feature thermal protection. If you want to use the PSU with other, state-of-the-art, digital laboratory equipment, you should pay attention to the availability of drivers for measurement software.
Comfort of operation depends on large displays. Today, digital displays are used as a standard: LCD, OLED, or LED. In daily operation, also quick (configurable) access buttons and additional pin-outs on the back panel are helpful as well.
Choosing the right power supply unit is very important to each electronics engineer and designer.
