Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is a sudden and momentary flow of electric charge between two bodies with different electrostatic potentials, typically caused by direct contact or close proximity. This phenomenon results from voltage differences accumulated on the surfaces of insulating or conductive materials, especially under low humidity conditions, where the buildup of static electricity is more likely.
ESD poses a significant threat to electronic devices and semiconductor components, which are highly sensitive to even low-energy surges. Discharges imperceptible to humans can damage transistor gates, break internal connections, or degrade the parameters of integrated circuits. The effects may be immediate (e.g., complete component failure) or long-term, when electrical properties deteriorate and manifest only during device operation.
From a physical standpoint, ESD is a process of dynamic potential equalization, during which the accumulated energy is rapidly released through air or another medium with increased conductivity. The discharge duration is extremely short (on the order of nanoseconds) and characterized by high peak current values, making it difficult to detect and suppress in real time. Therefore, ESD prevention relies primarily on proactive measures.
In the electronics industry, numerous standards and procedures have been developed to mitigate ESD risk, including humidity control, the use of antistatic clothing, grounding of personnel and work surfaces, and the design of electronic circuits with integrated protection structures. Devices susceptible to ESD are marked with special warning symbols and must be handled in accordance with strict procedures defined by international standards such as IEC 61340 or ANSI/ESD S20.20.
