The Lubelskie Voivodeship and Lublin universities have signed a memorandum of understanding to build a quantum computer to support research, administration and the development of modern computing technologies.
The Lublin Quantum Computing Centre project involves cooperation between the Lublin Voivodeship local government and four universities: Lublin University of Technology, the University of Life Sciences, the Medical University and the Catholic University of Lublin. The role of scientific and technical coordinator is to be played by Lublin University of Technology, and the project is to encompass both infrastructure and the construction of a team of specialists.
According to the information provided at the signing of the memorandum, the quantum computer would be used for research and development purposes and to optimise data management processes within the structures of the provincial administration. The estimated cost of the computer itself has been set at around PLN 50 million, with the cost of the qubits and specialised infrastructure remaining a separate part of the outlay.
The quantum computer uses qubits instead of classical bits, which allows multiple states to be processed in parallel. The source material indicates applications in scientific computing, cryptography and security, and the need for funding from EU funds, KPO and Ministry of Science and Higher Education programmes.
The memorandum is a first organisational step, but shows the growing importance of quantum technologies as part of the research and economic infrastructure in Poland.
