Entropy - definition

Entropy is a physical and statistical quantity that describes the degree of disorder or randomness in a physical system. In thermodynamics, entropy measures the amount of energy in a system that is unavailable for performing useful work, while in statistical terms, it quantifies the number of possible microscopic configurations a system can assume for a given macroscopic state. Entropy is a state function and increases in natural processes according to the second law of thermodynamics, which states that any spontaneous process leads to an increase in the total entropy of an isolated system.

Originally introduced in the 19th century in the context of heat processes and thermal engines, the concept of entropy has since been extended to many fields of science, including statistical mechanics, computer science, cosmology, and information theory. In information theory, entropy—introduced by Claude Shannon—represents the amount of uncertainty or complexity in a given signal. In quantum physics, the concept of entropy is used to describe the state of elementary particle systems and phenomena related to gravity and black holes.

It serves as a predictive tool for determining the direction of processes and assessing their reversibility. In engineering applications, understanding entropy is essential for analyzing thermodynamic cycles, evaluating energy efficiency, and designing heating and cooling systems. In a broader context, entropy also plays a role in describing the evolution of complex systems and order in nature, offering a quantitative measure of disorder and randomness.
